The main structure is a close variation of the Holland-Dozier-Holland penned Heatwave, the 1963 Motown monster hit for Martha and the Vandellas
The instrumental section of  "Why?"
is an early nod to sitarist Ravi Shankar and Indian raga music that would soon catch fire in the Western world with further  spark from George Harrison
and the Beatles. ('Tw
as Crosby who turned Harrison on to Shankar,
or so that story goes.)
